Dentistry Procedures: Cats & Dogs

A Dentistry Procedure may be recommended by your Veterinarian for your pet for several reasons including signs of tartar accumulation, gingivitis, Periodontal disease, fractured or decaying teeth or exhibiting signs of oral pain and discomfort. Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by Veterinarians in both cats and dogs. Periodontal diseases occur when plaque and tartar cause pockets or gum recession around the tooth's attachment. If left untreated, the infection can spread deeper into the tooth pocket, eventually destroying the bone.

On the morning of your pet's dental procedure a pre-anesthetic blood panel will be run to ensure your pet is healthy to undergo anesthesia. An electrocardiogram (ECG) will also be performed on your pet to provide your Veterinarian with a reading of their heart rhythm. In addition, a full mouth dental x-ray will give your Veterinarian a complete view of the teeth inside your pet's mouth and underneath the gum line.

During dental procedures your pet may require teeth to be extracted. Depending on the location of the tooth, the extractions are classified as 'simple' or 'complex' and certain teeth may take longer to remove. If your pet requires extractions, post-operative pain medication will be administered by your Veterinarian to keep them comfortable while they rest at home.

Dental procedures at Watzin Veterinary Clinic are performed by our Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians from Monday to Friday. Dentistries are a same day procedure and generally your pet will be able to go home after 6:00pm that day.
