Senior Wellness Screening

We strongly believe that Senior Wellness testing in our patients is paramount in their care after the age of seven years old. Often our pets do not let us know if there is anything wrong with them until their disease has become more advanced. The silent symptoms of disease that affect the heart, kidneys, liver, thyroid gland, and pancreas often go undetected until the condition is advanced and often more difficult to treat. As a result we advocate semi-annual physical examination of all our senior pets and annual senior wellness testing. This test may include:

Complete physical examination and Veterinary Consultation to check for:

  • Dental disease
  • Assess heart and lung
  • Abdominal palpation to detect for changes in organ size or cancer
  • Eye examination to check for cataracts, dry eye or glaucoma
  • Ear examination to ensure no infection or tumours
  • Joint exam to assess arthritis
  • Coat/skin examination to detect parasites, hormonal influences, tumours

Blood Screen including:

  • CBC to check for infection, anaemia, and bleeding disorders
  • Blood profile to assess: liver evaluation, kidney evaluation, calcium level, electrolyte levels, glucose to check for diabetes, protein levels, pancreas function and Thyroid evaluation
  • Urinalysis to check for kidney function, infection, and urinary crystals
  • Fecal Examination to check for intestinal parasites

Additional tests may be recommended such as:

  • Electrocardiograph (ECG)
  • Radiographs (x-rays)
  • Ultrasound
  • Viral tests for cats (Feline leukemia, Feline immunodeficiency virus)
  • Heartworm disease for dogs
  • Hormone assays
